Blazing the way in education innovation and unique in the educational market in both purpose and scope, Pilates Excel is a secondary educational curriculum specifically designed to fulfill the unmet educational needs of Pilates teachers, regardless of your placement along the education continuum.

As many teachers realize rather quickly after beginning their teaching careers, primary programs -even the biggest and best– are often short on content, meaning & practical application. Traditionally-based and technically updated for today’s marketplace challenges, Pilates Excel fills those educational gaps and rounds out your understanding of the work. Pilates Excel helps you find your passion within the work and teaches you how to successfully position yourself in the market, regardless of your teaching model.
Pilates Excel is also appropriate for certain teachers currently in the process of primary training. Used as a mentoring program, Pilates Excel unfolds concurrently with and dovetailing to a comprehensive primary program and together, form a super-solid foundation.

Of utmost importance and specifically addressing one of the most overlooked aspects of teaching, Pilates Excel includes a business development curriculum geared toward helping you build a secure and dedicated book of business regardless of your teaching model.

Course descriptions:

Fundamentals of Pilates. Beginning with a multimedia presentation highlighting historical articles, interviews and significant pieces of Joe & Clara’s own original marketing materials, we examine the intent, scope and meaning of the practice of Pilates as envisioned, lived and taught by its creators. Understanding Joe & Clara’s intent helps modern teachers establish and define our role, the goals of the work and our responsibility in teaching it.
Following on from there, we thoroughly deconstruct the muscular engagements and movements within the method that are foundational in nature; in one way or another they exist as the base of virtually each and every exercise.
Do your legs stay quiet and long on the mat for Roll Up? Do they float up and stay up on Teaser? Can you maintain the proper hip flexion angle on Jack Knife and Balance Control? Can you establish and maintain the scoop of your belly and length in your spine during Short Spine, Elephant, Kneeling Knees, Pull the Pedal Up? Do you understand and can you explain to clients the importance of neutral pelvis and neutral spine?
Learn to assess, address and overcome the barriers to the successful performance of these foundational elements and with that, you will be able to safely advance your clients beyond the basics and work toward the idealized aspects of the work – a beautiful Roll Up, a strong Teaser and the inversions.
Balancing the Body Side to Side. Whether subtle or dramatic, built into all bodies are strength imbalances. Achieving Pilates principles of balance, strength and control are especially challenging for clients with significant strength imbalances. An athlete competing in a single-sided sport shows us these biases with every move and, with a trained eye observing, their quiet body. But a new mother, a technology worker or a client with scoliosis may present equally significant biases though caused by very different means.
In any case and lived forward, these imbalances spawn a cycle of increased muscular and structural dysfunction, improper biomechanics leading to further adaptation and sadly, often debilitating pain.

Very few historic Pilates exercises include unilateral patterns but many bilateral Pilates exercises can be safely and effectively broken apart to overcome the bias, working with the weak side more aggressively than the strong.

This workshop focuses on training your eye to assess side-to-side weaknesses wherever they exist and whatever the cause. You’ll learn the safety and progression theories to address those weaknesses and you’ll also practice doing and teaching many bilateral exercises – broken apart – to feature unilateral work. Beyond the applicable historic Mat exercises, we’ll take from Reformer, Wunda Chair and Trap Table as well as smaller props that clients can use on their own away from the studio.

Prepare to see, think and solve problems with new skills, awareness and dedication!

Restoring Order | Historic Reformer. The historic work as a foundation is imperative if the goal of your Pilates studio is to use Joseph Pilates and his work as the ideal. This workshop is especially valuable for teachers who lack an educational base in Classical Pilates and covers how to teach Basic + a Few Intermediate Historic Reformer Exercises, including the purpose of each exercise, Mounts & Dismounts, Equipment settings, Safety & basic modifications, Basic corrections, Number of repetitions, Transitions. Specifically, this workshop will cover the basic historic repertoire which includes the following exercises: Footwork: toes, arches, heels, tendon stretch, Hundred, Leg Circles and Frogs, Short Box: Hug, Flat back, Side to Side, Spine Twist*, Tree, Stomach Massage: Rounded, Reach Back, Reach Up, Twist*, Elephant, Kneeling Knee Stretches: Flexion, Extension, Knees Off, Eve’s Lunge*, Prep for Knees Off*, Running, Pelvic Lift
